Slider Air-Bearing Surface Crown Control through Transfer Tool Design

      A simple change in transfer tool design provides an opportunity
to shift the slider Air-Bearing Surface (ABS) Crown mean to a more
desirable positive value.

      By introducing slits on the lateral sides of the transfer tool,
a more positive slider ABS Crown has been produced.  The concept is
to allow for curvature or flexing of the slider ABS during ABS
lapping.  The curvature is made possible by cutting the lateral sides
of the transfer tool with the wire Electro-Discharge Machining (EDM)
method.  The distance of the slits from the transfer tool ABS and the
size of the slits determine how much positive Crown one wants to
shift.

      One advantage that this invention offers is that the slider
Crown mean can be shifted to a designated positive value by iterating
with the distance between the slits and transfer tool ABS.  Another
advantage is that the original standard deviation of the Crown
distribution is not degraded but preserved.  The slit cuts change
only the Crown mean.

      The Figure shows an example of introducing slits on the lateral
sides of the transfer tools.  The net result is that one side of the
slider ABS is lapped slightly more than the other side, due to
off-set force.  Hence, a more positive ABS Crown is created.  The
