Motor Housing for Hard Disk Drive

      This article discloses a spindle motor housing design used in
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).  A square shaped housing for a spindle motor
can make the entire drive smaller in size.

      The Figure shows an example of this square shaped housing (1).
This square shaped housing (1) makes saved areas (2) around it.

      In a low profile HDD, the controller card has an opening where
the spindle motor's housing is.  But, when the circuit board has an
opening, effective area is lost and large ICs may not be able to be
mounted.  With a housing shaped in a square and the opening of the
card also in a square, the effective area of the card increases.

      By using this idea, compact HDDs are possible without
compromising spindle motor characteristics.
