Head Hovering to Reduce Seek Time

Disclosed is a method to reduce average seek time without any
change on hardware of hard disk drives.  The method is to limit the
radius of sliders at the idling mode.

The radius of sliders at idling (no seeking) mode of hard disk
drives should be limited in the following two areas.
  1.  Area where average seek time of some optional seek mode is
shorter than average seek time of random seek mode.
  2.  Around the center radius of data zone of disk.

The Figure shows the simulation of average seek time at various
idling radius from ID to OD of data zone.  Parameter "a" depends on
seek mode.  a=1 for random seeking.  In this case, idling radius
should be from 26.05mm to 39.25mm to reduce seeking time.
