Combined Taper Flat and Negative Pressure Air Bearing

Disclosed is an air bearing design which combines a taper flat
and a negative pressure air bearing into one design.  This combined
configuration improves performance and manufactureability.

The design features an inverted U rail negative pressure air
bearing located between the two rails of a taper flat air bearing.
The groove between the two air bearings is etched to the same depth
as the negative pressure pocket.  This allows all air bearing
features to be defined with one etching process step, simplifying
manufactureability.  (*) consisted of an etched negative pressure
air bearing between machined taper flat rails, thus requiring two
process steps to manufacture, an etching process and a machining
process.  (*) required the rail defining groove between the negative
pressure bearing and taper flat rails be machined to sufficient depth
to ensure it maintained ambient pressure.  Ambient pressure need not,
and is not maintained in the grooves of the design disclosed here to
achieve the performance advantages.

The performance advantages of a combined air bearing design are
lower skew sensitivity and higher damping.  These improvements are
achieved without degrading other negative pressure advantages of
faster take-off velocity and flat fly height profile.  The lower skew
sensitivity is achieved via cancelling effects when taper flat and
negative pressure air bearings are combined.
