Flush-Front DASD Blank Cover

Disclosed is a DASD blank cover and a bezel with mating
features.  The cover fills an opening in the bezel when a DASD device
is not installed, providing the appearance of flush front surfaces as
the blank cover and bezel are assembled together.

Fig. 1 is an isometric view of the blank cover 1, showing
particularly the outer cover surface 2.  Fig. 2 is a fragmentary
transverse cross sectional view of the blank cover 1 installed within
a mating bezel 3.

The longitudinally extending edges 4 of the opening in bezel 3
for receiving blank cover 1 are tapered so that this opening is wider
at outer bezel surface 5 than at inner bezel surface 6.  A rounded
rib 7, extending generally around the periphery of blank cover 1,
contacts tapered edges 4 of bezel 3, limiting the positioning of
cover 1 to that a uniform gap 8 extends around outer cover surface 2.

Blank cover 1 is snapped into bezel 3 from inside the bezel, in
the direction of arrow 9.  As this assembly operation takes place,
rounded rib 7 engages tapered edges 4, forcing the temporary widening
of the opening between these edges 4.  When the cover 1 is fully
moved into position, the elastic properties of bezel 3 cause this
opening return to its former width, with a snapping action that
subsequently holds the bezel in place.  At each end of cover 1, an
end tab 10 sliding within a slot (not shown) in bezel 3, limits the
motion of cover 1 in the instal...
