Methods to Enhance Thin Film MagnetoResistive Recording Head's Resistance
to Physical and Chemical Attack

      A thin film MagnetoResistive (MR) head is described which has a
protective coating to improve both wear and corrosion resistance of
the head.

      The head comprises an MR element 1 between two shields 2, 3.
The MR head structure is deposited on a suitable substrate 4, and
should the substrate be conductive, a non-conductive tough coating is
provided such as sputtered or CVD deposited alumina.  The first
shield is of a tough material such as hydrogenated amorphous carbon,
amorphous carbon, zirconium oxide, titanium oxide, alumina etc. with
any necessary adhesion promoters can be used.
