Non-Deterministic Dynamic Query for Job Re-Direction Mechanism

      Disclosed is a scheduling protocol mechanism which provides a
means of automatically redirecting job requests in a distributed
print environment.

      Distributed print resources vary significantly in terms of raw
through-put capability and customer cost.  A temporally sensitive
dynamic load-balancing mechanism is required and defined in order to
realize optimal utilization of physical print resources which are
shared by multiple hosts.  This is required for initial state
determination in a customer specific environment, in order that
configuration load balancing can be achieved in a distributed
production environment.

      A printer device sense 'type-model' value is queried from the
current resource table, referenced by control unit address.  A
channel ioctl is driven to each control unit in the configuration for
all configured physical device addresses (01-FE).  Status of the
printer is maintained in the printer object at the host (scheduler)
level.  ***Status includes available, off-line, un-available.
***Each server (host scheduler) evaluates and provides the printer
type(s).  Type information is kept and sorted based upon device
performance criteria.

      An ioctl is driven for each device that is defined in the
server configuration information table.  The sense type-model and
operation code information is recorded in the active device table.
