Abstract

By storing both annotations and documents in a server machine, it is possible to link multimedia annotations to several documents and documents to documents. This provides a mechanism to traverse documents using the annotations as hypermedia nodes in a document tree. One annotation may be linked in from several documents, and these documents can be browsed using the annotations as "bridges." This design which consists of a collaborative annotation system and a centralized server to store annotations and documents makes this hypermedia document possible.

Hypermedia Documents using a Server in a Collaborative Session

By storing both annotations and documents in a server machine,
it is possible to link multimedia annotations to several documents
and documents to documents.  This provides a mechanism to traverse
documents using the annotations as hypermedia nodes in a document
tree.  One annotation may be linked in from several documents, and
these documents can be browsed using the annotations as "bridges."
This design which consists of a collaborative annotation system and a
centralized server to store annotations and documents makes this
hypermedia document possible.

If documents and annotations are stored in a centralized
server, then it is possible to attach the same annotations to several
documents at the same time.  It is also possible to attach documents
itself as annotations to other documents.  Since two or more
documents are linked via annotations it is possible to traverse from
document to document using the annotations as links.  These
annotations may be text, graphics, audio or video alinks.  These
annotations may be text, graphics, audio or video annotations.

This concept amounts to taking an annotation-centric view
instead of the traditional document-centric view.  Along with the
other items in a pull-down menu attached to every annotation is an
item which can list all menu attached to every annotation is an item
which can list all the documents that link to this annotatio...
