Real-Time Word Recognition Method

      Disclosed is a technique for reducing the size of the detail
matching process and improving the response time for an isolated-word
speech recognizer.

      An isolated-word recognition method was previously proposed
that combined with a word preselection and detail matching for the
preselected word (1).  The word preselection uses one-state Hidden
Markov Models, and the detail matching uses fenonic Markov models.
In this method, the detail matching is done for the preselected words
whenever an endpoint candidate is detected.

      Using the knowledge that the word preselection method is robust
for word boundary errors, a method was proposed for reducing the size
of the detail matching process and improving the response time when
multiple endpoints are detected.

      Fig. 1 shows an example of how our method works.  When an
endpoint candidate E1 is detected, preselected words are obtained.
Then, the detail matching is executed for the preselected words,
followed by likelihood estimation for the preselected words.  After
that, if a new endpoint candidate E2 is detected, the ratio of label
length A to label length B is calculated.  If the ratio dose not
exceed a threshold value, E2 is regarded as a new endpoint, but the
detail matching is executed for the preselected words at E1.  In this
