Abstract

Disclosed is a system to allow programs to process text data that has only character codes, which can display bit image data on the screen. When an application program opens the text file, the system changes some Double Byte Characters Set (DBCS) fonts of computer system by referring a registered bit image.

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 78% of the total text.

Image Displaying by Font Change in a Text Mode

Disclosed is a system to allow programs to process text data
that has only character codes, which can display bit image data on
the screen.  When an application program opens the text file, the
system changes some Double Byte Characters Set (DBCS) fonts of
computer system by referring a registered bit image.

The Figure shows the example of the system that allows text
editor (or text viewer, etc.) display image data on Japanese PC DOS.
The function is offered by a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR)
program.  The TSR program controls 'File Open' function call of DOS.
When a Text File is opened by the function call, the TSR program
refers to the Image Data File that corresponding to the Text File.
The Image Data File, that was made by other utility program, consists
of two kinds of data.  One is DBCS character code and the other is
image data for each character code in the file (see Image Data File
in the Figure).  The TSR program changes the font image of the
character codes in Image Data File (Character (1)-(9) in the Figure)
so that the set of the character form registers bit image.  The
character code which is used in the Image Data File must be the code
that is not used in text file, because the TSR program changes the
font image of the character codes in the Image Data File.  The
following is the sequence of its procedure:
  1.  An application program calls DOS function call to open a Text
