System software such as MVS and VM do have a certain number of algorithms that are dependent upon the processors performance. Examples being the billings for usage that are done for one processor versus that for another processor when one processor is twice as fast as another. This is applicable to OLTP, CICS, IMS environments.

      System software such as MVS and VM do have a certain number of
algorithms that are dependent upon the processors performance.
Examples being the billings for usage that are done for one processor
versus that for another processor when one processor is twice as fast
as another.  This is applicable to OLTP, CICS, IMS environments.

      In the past, new releases of the software have been issued with
new values for new hardware models.  This could cause delay in
installations, waiting for new release, or in the installing of the
new release.

      The design provides new data in the SCLP command (SCP Info)
that is issued by software at IPL time.  The Processor Controller of
the hardware model contains the data required by the software giving
the Relative CP Capability Indicator (RCCI) of the hardware model.

      The RCCI is a heuristic number with no precise definition.  It
is a relative measure of how quickly the CPU finishes selected work
loads on representative configurations.  The number is relative to
the capability indicators of CPUs of other models and configurations
to perform similar work.  The number also reflects design differences
that distinguish different models.
