Abstract

Disclosed is a device that notifies users of system mode transitions and adapts itself to individual users by learning their reactions to the notifications. A system mode transition usually occurs without a direct request from the user. Examples include invoking a screen saver, and entering the system suspend (power saving) mode after a certain period of time has passed without any input from the user. If users receive prior notification of these transitions in order to save power or manage the system security, because the transitions will not be unexpected.

System Mode Transition with Notification and Adaptation

Disclosed is a device that notifies users of system mode
transitions and adapts itself to individual users by learning their
reactions to the notifications.  A system mode transition usually
occurs without a direct request from the user.  Examples include
invoking a screen saver, and entering the system suspend (power
saving) mode after a certain period of time has passed without any
input from the user.  If users receive prior notification of these
transitions in order to save power or manage the system security,
because the transitions will not be unexpected.

The Figure shows the device configuration.  This device (1) has
interfaces with both the system (2) and the user (3).  It is composed
of a system mode monitor (4), a system mode transition indicator (5),
and a user's reaction monitor (6).

The system mode monitor checks the system status and detects
the system mode transitions in advance.  Before the system mode
actually changes, the system mode transition indicator notifies the
user that a system mode transition is imminent.  The user's reaction
monitor processes the user's reactions to the system mode transition
notification, and updates the timer setting of the system mode
transition to adapt the working environment accordingly.  For
example, if the user rejects the system mode transition shortly after
notification, the transition timer setting will be doubled, or if the...
