Abstract

In a conventional disk drive array which includes two or more disk drives, each disk drive within the array has a set of fully functional electronics. The individual set of electronics provides data detection, data handling, interface and servo control functions for individual drive. Since not all the drives are required to be functional at one time, the array has more electronics than it really needs. The overall cost of the electronics for the array is high, and so is the power consumption for the array.

Reduced Electronics Disk Drive Arrays

      In a conventional disk drive array which includes two or more
disk drives, each disk drive within the array has a set of fully
functional electronics.  The individual set of electronics provides
data detection, data handling, interface and servo control functions
for individual drive.  Since not all the drives are required to be
functional at one time, the array has more electronics than it really
needs.  The overall cost of the electronics for the array is high,
and so is the power consumption for the array.

      A low power electronics array or system is disclosed to include
a new electronics architecture with substantially reduced circuits.
The array electronics has subsets of electronic circuits for
individual drives, and a set of electronic circuits for shared
functions for functional operation of all the drives within the
array.  The subsets of electronics for individual drives consist of
pre-amplifiers, signal buffer circuits, Voice Coil Motor (VCM) and
Spindle Motor (SPM) driver and control circuits.  The shared set of
electronics consists of a data and position signal detection circuit
with an analog multiplexing input stage, a main processor, data read
and write handling and timing circuit, data error detection and
interface control logics, and a condensed servo control engine
