Private and Public Multimedia Annotations in a Collaborative Session

Users may choose to use two classes of annotations, private and
public.  Private annotations are not shared with other users in the
session whereas public annotations are subject to collaboration,
modification and even deletion.

In a shared annotation system, all committed annotations are
accessible by all the users in the session.  These annotations are
also called "public" annotations.  Further, these may be modified,
deleted or re-located.  In such an open system, it is essential to be
able to make certain private notes and observations.  These are
called "private" annotations.  Users in a joint session are oblivious
to other users' private annotations.  Both private and public
annotations may be text, audio, graphics, or video annotations.

Private annotations may be converted to public at any time,
whereas public annotations may not be reverted back to private by any
user.  (A mechanism of cloning annotations is provided to do the
latter task indirectly.  A cloned annotations is a local copy with
local ownership of a public annotation.)  Annotations are sent to
other users using a menu-driven choice which "commits" the annotation
to the network.  Private annotations cannot be committed until the
current annotation privileges are specifically converted from private
to public.
