Method of Altering Operational Mode of Machine

A method of putting a remote machine into different modes is
disclosed.  It causes a machine, in a remote site, to switch or
change to many different modes of operation such as configuration
update, diagnostic, normal operation, etc.

The machine contains Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM).  It contains
fields which define many modes of operation of the machine.  The
diagnostics check these fields every time during system re-boots.
Since, these are simple memory locations in the main processor's
memory map, they can be modified in many different ways.  After the
mode is changed, the box is commanded to re-boot and it restarts in
the new mode.  In practice, mode changing can be done through a modem
attached to the service port of the machine.
