Tape Cartridge Loader with Cartridge Presence Sensing

The cartridge-presence sensor is used to ensure that a tape
cartridge tray in the loader will not be lowered without carrying the
tape cartridge with the loader tray.

This invention utilizes a VCR-like type of manual loader and
apply it for automatic robotic loading, we introduced a sensing
scheme that is the Cartridge present sensor.

In a manual load situation, the tape cartridge is being
inserted and first opens the loader door and triggers the door open
sensor.  As the cartridge travels further in, it triggers the tray up
sensor, which in turn, lets the motor to know that it is ready to
load.  In other words, the loader tray is ready to translate linearly
in then down.  While the loader tray is being moved down, it carries
with it the tape cartridge, since at this time the hand has let go of
the cartridge.

However, in an automatic loading situation, the Data Server
picker arm may not let go of the cartridge, even when the loader tray
is all set to go.  The tug-of-war situation is solved by the use of a
cartridge present sensor located at the end of the loader tray.  This
sensor performs the function of getting the cartridge and the loader
tray to load together; one can not go without the other.  The picker
has to let go before the cartridge can be lowered or loaded.  The
cartridge's present sensor also acts as a feed-complete sensor.  The
loader tray will not be lower...
