Abstract

Disclosed is a method to improve the reliability of data integrity of embedded servo hard disk drive which uses No ID format. This method makes the data sectors positioned keeping difference of physical location between adjacent cylinders. It can prevent that the drive reads incorrect data in adjacent cylinder accidentally and send the incorrect data to host system.

      Disclosed is a method to improve the reliability of data
integrity of embedded servo hard disk drive which uses No ID format.
This method makes the data sectors positioned keeping difference of
physical location between adjacent cylinders.  It can prevent that
the drive reads incorrect data in adjacent cylinder accidentally and
send the incorrect data to host system.

      Fig. 1 shows typical usual track format of No ID hard disk
drive.  When external mechanical shock is applied to the drive on
reading sector A, head will move to end of sector B.  At this time,
though the drive will detect ECC error, there is possibility that the
powerful ECC correction generates incorrect data if data pattern of
sector A and B is similar.  Fig. 2 shows exclusive track format
proposed in this article.  In this case, mis-correction possibility
will be extremely lower comparing with Fig. 1 because drive will read
first half of sector B after first half of sector A.

      Fig. 3 shows general scheme of WRITE mechanism of No ID FORMAT
hard disk drive.  The exclusive track format is easily implemented as
below.
  1.  Host Interface firmware provides cylinder information
       to FORMATTER CONTROLLER.
  2.  FORMATTER CONTROLLER checks whether the cylinder number
       is odd or even.
  3.  If the cylinder number is even (or odd), FORMATTER
       CONTROLLER perform usual WRITE operation.  If it...
