Connector Docking Guide for Plugging Connector Assembly

Disclosed is a connector docking or plugging guide which will
prevent pin bending when plugging manually without clear line of
sight.

The design is a metal guide bracket (2) capable of being
mounted to a backplane stiffener (1) at both ends of a connector on
backplane.  The guide provides lead-in flanges (3) which pick up on
docking connector (4).  Guide centers connector 4 in both horizontal
and vertical directions before pin contact, sooner than possible with
existing connector docking guide features.

Guides mount on backplane stiffener utilizing molded slots 6 in
stiffener and a compression fit when guide legs (5) are pressed into
slots.

No features are required to be molded on stiffener above
mounting surfaces.  Guide bridges connector slot.  Both of these
features allow stiffener to be used in other applications where guide
features are not required.

Provided sufficient space is available on stiffener, this guide
can be used as a plugging aid anywhere similar connectors are used.
This plugging guide design could also be used with metal stiffeners
with little or no modification (Figure).
