Providing Both Fine and Coarse Control of Zooming on the Same Display

A method of providing both fine and coarse control of zooming
on a display is disclosed.

See the Figure for the referenced items.  The lines AC and BD
will be referred to as "guide wires".  The upper row of vertical bars
is the "summarized data area" and the lower row is the "expanded data
area".  The summarized data area shows the entire range of data.
o  Moving point A allows coarse control of the beginning of the
      expanded data area.
The user drags the upper end of the left guide wire to the
desired point on the summarized data area and drops it.  This
changes the beginning of the expanded data area to the first
data
item represented by that point in the summarized data.  The
expanded data area is rescaled as needed.
o  Moving point B allows coarse control of the end of the expanded
      data area.
The user drags the upper end of the right guide wire to the
desired point on the summarized data area and drops it.  This
changes the end of the expanded data area to be the data item
immediately before the drop point in the summarized data.  The
expanded data area is rescaled as needed.
o  Moving point C allows fine control of the beginning of the
      expanded data area.
The user drags the lower end of the left guide wir...
