Abstract

A method for verifying the operation of communications network hardware is disclosed. Communications network terminals and computer equipment are shipped with a default test configuration already loaded. When diagnostics are invoked, test data using the factory default test configuration is used. The test results isolate real hardware problems from user configuration problems and eliminate unnecessary part replacement.

Verifying Hardware by using Configuration-Independent Network Devices

      A method for verifying the operation of communications network
hardware is disclosed.  Communications network terminals and computer
equipment are shipped with a default test configuration already
loaded.  When diagnostics are invoked, test data using the factory
default test configuration is used.  The test results isolate real
hardware problems from user configuration problems and eliminate
unnecessary part replacement.

      To employ this hardware verification method, a low level echo
(or ping) test is created that uses a predefined test configuration.
The test configuration is independent from the customer's functional
configuration.

      When the verification test is invoked instructions are
presented that inform the user how to place the network equipment
into the predefined test mode.  When the test is completed, the
original configuration is restored.

      This test method eliminates the need for additional tools and
equipment to diagnose problems.  The network equipment manufacturers
have integrated this test method into their products.

      By using this test method, hardware suppliers can quickly
determine how to best handle a customer problem.  The call can be
routed
correctly to either the hardware or software configuration experts.
