Thermal Sizing Technique for Clam-Shell Die-Castings

      A thermal sizing technique for clam-shell style disk drive base
castings is disclosed.  The sizing process will control the critical
openings of a base casting without plastically deforming it.

      As shown in the Figure, sizing members (1) are inserted into
the casting (2) in the locations of the actuator (3) and spindle
motor shafts (4).  The spread casting dimensions (A and B) are below
the casting material's yield limit.  During thermal normalization,
the elastic stress is relieved, redefining the steady state opening
of the base casting.
