Generic Graphical Security System

Disclosed is a security feature for a personal computer having
an operating system with a graphical interface, in which the user
defines a security window as an area on his desktop screen.

The user of the computer defines this area, which can be as
small as a single pixel, using his pointing device.  In a computing
system having multiple users, for whom multiple levels of access are
to be granted, multiple security windows may be defined to use
different passwords.

The Figure shows an example of the display screen activated to
define the parameters associated with this feature.  To define a new
security window (1) on this screen, select diagonally opposite
corners (2) and (3) with a pointing device, such as a mouse.  Next,
select the password button (4), and a dialog box (not shown) is
brought up to aid in the definition process.  The password may be a
series of characters entered using the keyboard, a series of
depressions of the buttons associated with the pointing device, a
series of selections made using a stylus or touchscreen, or a
combination of these actions.  The user can also use sounds button
(5) to bring about the association of sounds with a successful or
unsuccessful attempt to unlock the system.
