Write Retry Success Sector Verification in Error Recovery Steps

      This article describes a method of intelligent WRITE error
recovery and sector reassignment of Hard Disk Drive, which predicts
READ error.

The algorithm for this method is as follows:
  1.  When the drive detects an error during WRITE command execution,
       it performs error recovery procedure which is programmed in
the
       drive firmware.
  2.  If the error is recovered after many retries, the firmware
       performs VERIFY operation on the sector.
  3.  The firmware checks the error rate of the sector verify, and if
       it exceeds pre-defined level, the firmware performs
       auto-reassignment of the sector.

      The check of readability is essentially the read error
prediction that is expected to happen on future READ command.  With
this prediction, READ hard-error can be prevented.  Since the VERIFY
operation is only attempted when the drive detects a WRITE error,
there is no performance impact.
