Software Copy-Protection Method using Serial Number of Disk Storage

Disclosed is a copy-protection method using identifier data
unique to a storage media where the protected programs is installed.

This description assumes, as an embodiment, that a program is
shipped within a diskette and is installed in a disk storage.  At
installation, the serial number of the installed disk storage, is
read and stored into the installed disk storage after encrypted.  At
user run time, the stored serial number is decrypted by the program
to compare with the serial number of the disk storage where it is
actually stored.  Then, the program runs only when they match.  This
method protects copying between installed disk storages, and is
widely applicable since most disk storage devices have unique
readable serial numbers.

This method is also applicable to copy protection of a diskette
within which the program is shipped.  For protection of multiple
installation, the encrypted serial number is stored into the shipped
diskette also.  This can control the number of installations.

The popular conventional copy protection method uses a
hardware key device to ship a program customized to hold the unique
key
data.  This required efforts of customization and control of set
distribution.  The disclosed copy protection method eliminates such
efforts.
