Shrink on Clamp with Improved Compliance

      This design has improved compliance over previously used
designs with the added advantage of a flat top surface to ease
handling via a vacuum chuck.  This is especially advantageous for
small form factors, such as 2.5 inch and below.

      The design, as shown in the Figure, consists of an annular ring
with a "C" cross-section and a flat top.  The open portion of the "C"
faces out from the cylinder on which the disks are clamped.  The
function of the groove on the outside diameter is to increase the
compliance of the leg which contacts the disks.  In addition a
removal tool can be inserted in the groove to remove the clamp when
rework is required.  The geometry of the clamp is adjusted via finite
element analysis to maximize compliance while maintaining acceptable
stress levels.  The differences are the flat top and the increased
compliance (up to 4X according to finite element analysis) possible
with the current "C" design.
