Abstract

In some Telephone voice mail applications, it is necessary to trigger the voice mail application to activate the call answering services. This relies on the service user to ensure that upon leaving the office they take the appropriate action in order to turn on voice messaging. However, a problem arises if the user forgets, leaving the extension unattended without the services started.

Controlling Voice Mail Systems from Workstations

In some Telephone voice mail applications, it is necessary
to trigger the voice mail application to activate the call answering
services.  This relies on the service user to ensure that upon
leaving the office they take the appropriate action in order to turn
on voice messaging.  However, a problem arises if the user forgets,
leaving the extension unattended without the services started.

This solution takes advantage of the facilities provided by the
X window environment and makes specific use of the screen saver
programs that are available in most of these environments.  However,
this is not to say that this solution could not be implemented via a
slightly different method by monitoring the input events generated by

generated at moments when the screen saver should be activated due to
lack of user input.  At this point a socket connection is made to an
interface program within the voice mail application that can set
multiple functions within the voice mail application.  For example,
it could be used to set the voice mail answering on, or set the users
referral number to be their secretary.  Once the trigger has been
activated due to lack of input any user action that generates an
