Virus Checker Integrated in Web Explorers and File Transfer Protocol
Utilities

Disclosed is a personal computer virus checker integrated with
network utilities, such as Web explorers and File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) utilities.  The virus checker automatically scans all data
received by the computer from a network, before data is written to a
disk file.

After the user initiates a Web explorer or FTP download
request, the utility requests the file over the network.  After the
data is received by the computer from the network, the utility
invokes the integrated virus checker, which scans the data file for a
virus.  If no virus is found, the data file is written to disk, and
the utility continues to operate normally.  If a virus is found, the
user is notified, and the data file is discarded with no data being
written to disk.

In this way, virus checking is performed immediately, so that a
downloaded file can be used immediately with confidence that it is
free of viruses.  There is no time that a file which has not yet been
checked for viruses resides on a disk, where it can cause damage.
Since virus checking is automatically invoked, the user does not have
to remember to invoke a checker, nor does he have to learn how to use
a virus checker.
