Abstract

Computer peripherals, such as hard drives, floppy disk drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, or CD-R(ecordable) drives use monochromatic LEDs to signal activity. Typically, these monochromatic LEDs are green. When the monochromatic LED is on, activity is denoted. When the monochromatic LED is off, the peripheral is inactive. However, no indication of the type of activity is given with a monochromatic LED. This can require the user to guess if the proper activity is occurring.

Multi-Logic Level LED for Computer Input/Output Peripherals

Computer peripherals, such as hard drives, floppy disk
drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, or CD-R(ecordable) drives use
monochromatic LEDs to signal activity.  Typically, these
monochromatic LEDs are green.  When the monochromatic LED is on,
activity is denoted.  When the monochromatic LED is off, the
peripheral is inactive.  However, no indication of the type of
activity is given with a monochromatic LED.  This can require the
user to guess if the proper activity is occurring.

The use of a multicolor LED is proposed instead of a monochrome
LED to better signal peripheral activity.  For example, Hewlett
Packard manufactures the HLMP-4000 bicolor LED.  This LED offers RED
or Green,  and if Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) strobed between these
two colors, YELLOW.

Thus, the following logic table can be constructed for a HLMP-4000
LED in a peripheral.

Table  Monochrome versus Color-Indicated Activity
