Abstract

Disclosed is a method which prolong the hard disk drive's life used under the continuous operation in the server PCs. An automatic landing and taking off of the head controlled by the hard disk's Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) can prolong the hard disk drive's life in the continuous operating condition of PC.

      Disclosed is a method which prolong the hard disk drive's life
used under the continuous operation in the server PCs.  An automatic
landing and taking off of the head controlled by the hard disk's
Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) can prolong
the hard disk drive's life in the continuous operating condition of
PC.

      The hard disk drive's head is contaminated by the out-gassing
and the particle in disk enclosure during the continuous operation of
PC.  The fly height of this head is getting lower and lower.  This
fly height change can cause many errors in the operation.  Such
problems can be avoided by the power on and off of PC.  The head can
be cleaned by touching the disk.

      However, PCs for the some of server use or work station can not
be turned off.  Therefore, to avoid this problem for the above
customer, the spindle motor is controlled by SMART.  If some
parameters monitored by SMART exceed the limit, automatically the
spindle motor is stopped and started or reduce it's rotational speed
to make the head contact to the disk.

The following parameters can be used as a monitored parameter in
SMART.
  - Soft and Hard Error Rate
  - Number of Soft and Hard Error
  - Head Fly Height
  - Total Continuous Operating Time
