Belt Drive Cartridge Soft Load for Tape Drives

      A cartridge soft load and unload system for tape drives using a
belt drive system is disclosed.

      Using a belt drive system as shown in Fig. 1, belts 1 are
driven by gears 2 and idle on gears 3.  The belts 1 have cartridge
pick-up features 4 which catch the leading edge and the registration
notch on the cartridge 5 in order to pull it in and push it out of
the drive.

      As shown in Fig. 2, when the cartridge 5 is pulled into the
drive, the belts 1, made from a urethane material, are put under
tension causing the belts 1 to stretch and thereby providing a
loading force to the front datums 6.  The drive gears 2, which are
higher then the idle gears 3, also cause the belt 1 to apply an
upward loading force against datums 7 as the cartridge is loaded.

      A feature of this belt drive is that the relative vertical and
horizontal location of the drive gear 2 with respect to the idle gear
3 can be adjusted to change the force profile.
