Abstract

Disclosed is a form overlay printing system that uses a postscript file as a form definition file and creates a postscript file for printing by replacing field name strings written in the form definition postscript file with strings representing data created by a program. The attribute of the field is written in an attribute definition file. When the string representing the attribute is short, it may be written in the postscript file with the field name string.

Form Overlay Print System Using Postscript

Disclosed is a form overlay printing system that uses a
postscript file as a form definition file and creates a postscript
file for printing by replacing field name strings written in the form
definition postscript file with strings representing data created by
a program.  The attribute of the field is written in an attribute
definition file.  When the string representing the attribute is
short, it may be written in the postscript file with the field name
string.

The system consists of two components:  a compiler component
and an overlay processing component.  The former creates information
that can be used by a program and information that can be used by the
overlay processing component from a postscript file defining a form
layout.  The latter creates a new postscript file for printing by
replacing field name strings in the form definition postscript file
with strings representing data created by a program.  The form
definition postscript file can be built by using existing drawing
tools.  A field name is drawn as a string by using the drawing tools,
and the attribute of the field is written in the attribute definition
file.  The attribute contains the field name, printing format, data
type, data length, etc..  The compiler reads the form definition
postscript file and the attribute definition file.  It makes an
include file containing data structure information used by a program.
