Abstract

This invention discloses the burnishing method of the embedded particle or contamination on the disk surface which causes read errors in Hard Disk Drives (HDD). When an HDD is operating and read errors occur because of a defect on the disk surface, Low Round Per Minute (RPM) Burnish Method is proposed.

Zoned Low Round Per Minute Burnishing

      This invention discloses the burnishing method of the embedded
particle or contamination on the disk surface which causes read
errors in Hard Disk Drives (HDD).  When an HDD is operating and read
errors occur because of a defect on the disk surface, Low Round Per
Minute (RPM) Burnish Method is proposed.

      The motor rotation speed becomes lower than the original speed
under the head which is flying on the disk defect position, and the
head removes this defect.  Usually, the head take-off velocity is
changed from Inner Disk (ID) to Outer Disk (OD) position.  It is
effective to change motor rotation speed from ID to OD when the head
burnishes the defect on the disk surface.  With this method, the head
burnish can be operated uniformly from ID to OD.  A flow chart of
this method is shown in the Figure.
