      Disclosed is a design for a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) disk that has
a groove at Outer Disk (OD) side wall to improve its handling.  This
new groove design eliminates contamination and expands the disk
surface usage.

      Current high capacity HDD requires the maximum utilization of
the disk surface area.  To meet this requirement, disk inner and
outer edges are extended to their limits.  One emerging issue is
inner and outer edges' contamination due to handling.

      During handling of conventional disk, either edge surface will
inevitably contact the tools or container as shown in Fig. 1.  In
some cases, materials and debris on these tools/containers are
transferred onto the disk, causing reliablity problems such as
Thermal Asperity.

      As shown in Fig. 2, this new design has a groove on the outer
disk side wall which enables all handling of the disk to be done on
the side wall and eliminate contamination of the disk surface due to
handling.  Another advantage of this design is that disk
manufacturing process at most outer side can be uniformed.
