Error Correction Code Verification and Generation Performance Improvement

      Disclosed is a method for improving the performance of Error
Correction Code (ECC) calculations.  Performance is increased by
removing unnecessary calculations.

      The ECC algorithm requires calculating a single ECC value for
every source memory value.  This algorithm is very computationally
intensive and takes many processor cycles.

      In the case where the source memory value is zero, the
algorithm generates an ECC value of zero.  Therefore, the complex ECC
calculation can be omitted by immediately substituting the value zero
for the calculated ECC value.

      In memory where zeros are the predominant value, this
substitution avoids many unnecessary calculations.  Therefore, this
method allows for a significant speedup over strictly calculating the
ECC value for every source memory value.
