Remote Control of Personal Computers

      Disclosed is the use of a remote control unit, generally
similar to the type of unit conventionally used with a television
set, to achieve certain functions in controlling a personal computer.
In a simple form, the remote control unit is used as a convenient
security device, and during presentations, as a remote mouse and
volume control.

      As a security device, the remote control unit may provide the
only way to turn on the computer, through the application of an
encoded sequence of input actions, in a manner similar to a
conventional unlock sequence using the computer keyboard and mouse.

      During presentations, particularly with multimedia systems, the
remote control unit can command the computer to perform a number of
functions with the audio/visual output, such as changing the sound
level or selecting a screen image.  Remote pointing at the screen, or
cursor movement, can be achieved though the use of cursor keys in the
remote control unit.

      The remote control unit can be extended to perform a number of
additional functions.  Preferably, the unit is also programmable to
control various devices separate from the computer, such as a video
cassette recorder and a television set.  In other applications, the
