Parameters with Thermal Feedback

      Disclosed is a method of improving the read/write performance
on Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).  This is achieved by self-adjustable
Error Recovery Procedure (ERP) and optimizing channel parameters with
thermal feedback.

      HDD performance is changed by the environment temperature due
to:  (1) Flying Height change, (2) Temperature characteristics change
of each module and, (3) Others.  For instance, the soft error rate
degradation at low temperature due to flying height change and severe
error possibility increase at high temperature due to Thermal
Asperity (TA) are listed.

      Optimizing the ERP and channel parameters by temperature
condition, it is possible to minimize these degradations.

      This is to adjust ERP and channel parameters using the thermal
feedback which is monitored by a thermal sensor attached to a HDD.

      The Figure shows the example.  In this sample, the temperature
level is divided into three.  The temperature monitor portion comes
from SENSOR, AMPLIFIER, and COMPARATER.  (COMPARATER portion could be
alternated by Analog Digital Converter (ADC).)  Other portions have
mainly come from the Micro Processor Unit (MPU) and its microcode.

      The ERP and the channel parameters by each temperature level
are pre-set and saved in microcode as a table, and MPU selects the
best ERP and channel parameters based on th...
