When the top or bottom edge of a paper passes through an area between a front guide and a rear guide, the flapper closes and makes a paper path. As this flapper is moved by a carrier motion, it does not need an exclusive actuator.

Flapper Mechanism

      Disclosed is a Flapper Mechanism of a Passbook Printer
containing a flapper.  When the top or bottom edge of a paper passes
through an area between a front guide and a rear guide, the flapper
closes and makes a paper path.  As this flapper is moved by a carrier
motion, it does not need an exclusive actuator.

      The Figure shows an example of this mechanism.  A print head
(1) is fixed to a carrier (2) and guided to arrow direction by a
carrier shaft (3).  A flapper (4) and a lever (5) are fixed to a
shaft (4a) and they rotate around an axis of the shaft.  A roller
(5a) which is mounted on the lever (5) is inserted into an elongate
hole (7c) of a lever (7).  The lever (7) rotates around a stud (7a),
and on the end of it, a cam follower (7b) is mounted.  The cam
follower (7b) is moved downward by a cam (6) which is mounted on a
carrier (2), and then the lever (7) rotates.  This rotational motion
is transmitted through the roller (5a) and the lever (5) to the
flapper (4), and the flapper moves from open position (A) to close
position (B), and then it guides the paper.
