Abstract

Many laptop computers use large Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) as user display screens. Conventional wide-angle view LCD displays are readily observable by anyone nearby. This readability is undesirable, since the laptop computers are often used in public settings, and since users sometimes need to display confidential information in the course of their work using the laptop computers.

Many laptop computers use large Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs)
as user display screens.  Conventional wide-angle view LCD displays
are readily observable by anyone nearby.  This readability is
undesirable, since the laptop computers are often used in public
settings, and since  users sometimes need to display confidential
information in the course  of their work using the laptop computers.

Privacy in public settings is enhanced by placing a diffuser
plate for the purpose of making it harder for side-angle viewing of
the display.  The diffuser allows the viewer to personally view the
LCD display without sharing the displayed information with others.

Such a diffuser is preferably placed behind the front plate of
an LCD projector.  It is also preferable that the diffuser has
lower-angle diffusion, to give light to the LCD which is more
collumated that would otherwise be the case.

Some laptop computers, notably IBM* Corporation's line of
ThinkPad* computers, have a structure which allows an LCD backlight
to be taken off.  This structure facilitates changing diffusers, such
as those described here, for different purposes.  Replacing normal
transmission diffuser plate between LCD backlight with a narrow angle
diffuser, such a diffuser with acute interior angles could replace
the wide-angle diffuser for privacy.

It also allows for multiple diffusers that work in tandem.  A
