      Disclosed is an error handling mechanism that allows the
Automated Problem Determination Service (APDS) agents to determine
when to stop listening for First Failure Support Technology/2
(FFST/2*) error data should the APDS server become inactive for some
reason.

      The APDS agents intercept FFST/2 error data (generic alerts,
error log data, and message log data) and send it to the APDS server
for subsequent processing and analysis.  The APDS agents use a named
pipe to send the error data to the APDS server.  If the APDS agent
detects a named pipe error, it will send a "broken" message to the
APDS server mailslot.  If the APDS server is active, it will send
"connect" message to the APDS agent's mailslot.  This enables the
APDS agent that  had the error to disrupt the network as little as
possible and still retry the opening of the named pipe.  The next two
paragraphs discuss the activities which occur when the APDS server is
not active for some  reason.

      If the APDS server is taken down normally, it will broadcast a
"disconnect" message to all APDS agents.  The APDS agents discovery
thread will detect the disconnect message and stop waiting on FFST/2
error data until it detects a "connect" message (i.e., issued when
the APDS server comes back up).
