Abstract

Disclosed is a document-align mechanism for a printer which is composed of a pair of optical sensors placed behind a pair of align rollers. After a document insertion, when a sensor detects a leading edge of the document, an align roller, corresponded to each sensor, will stop. Therefore, a document is aligned along these sensors. However, these sensors must be accurately placed parallel with a print line. It makes for a high manufacturing cost.

Accurate Document Aligner

      Disclosed is a document-align mechanism for a printer which is
composed of a pair of optical sensors placed behind a pair of align
rollers.  After a document insertion, when a sensor detects a leading
edge of the document, an align roller, corresponded to each sensor,
will stop.  Therefore, a document is aligned along these sensors.
However, these sensors must be accurately placed parallel with a
print line.  It makes for a high manufacturing cost.

      There are two passes to make a high-accuracy document
align.  Align sensors need not be placed parallel with a print line
accurately.
  1.  Measurement of an angle of sensors against a print line
       (Fig. 1): An adjust paper must be inserted along a
       left-edge guide at right angles with a print line.  A
       distance (SENSOR_GAP) between positions, which each sensor
       detects a leading edge, is measured.  This distance value
       is saved into a non-volatile memory to use in a second pass.
  2.  An adjustment rotation after aligned along sensors
       (Figs. 2, 3): After a leading edge of a document is aligned
       at the align sensors, either align roller (the left align
       roller as shown in this Figure) will move for SENSOR_GAP
       to rotate a document to make leading edge parallel shown
       in with a print line.
