Etched Component Nest

      Disclosed is a method to make a locating nest that will provide
precision alignment of surface mount components, including fine pitch
and leadless devices for automated pickup.

      A precision alignment nest for surface mount components can be
produced using the same chemical etching method used to make solder
paste stencils.  Computer generated art work is used to lay out the
footprint of the component and then etch that footprint into a sheet
of metal.  The etched sheet is then incorporated in a fixture that
provides a frame to guide a component to the approximate location.
The leads of  the component drop into the relief pattern in the metal
providing precise  positioning.  Registering the component by the
leads and not the package  provides the most accurate method for
placement because it is the leads  that must be aligned with the
placement site pads.

      This type of nest works for all types of surface mount
components including fine pitch components and leadless components
that use solder bumps as interconnects.  Multiple nests can be made
simultaneously from one large sheet, greatly reducing the unit cost.
Holes for locating the etched plate in the fixture can be etched
though the sheet with the same time.

      The nest can also be constructed to accommodate a range of
components by making one row indentations to fit the footprint on one
