Enhanced Device Status Monitoring for Tape Device Sharing

      Disclosed is a method for multiple computer systems to allocate
the use of serially reusable resources among the systems in an
efficient, scalable and orderly manner through the use of a high
speed shared storage, referred to as a coupling technology.

      In order to solve the problem of having incomplete or
inaccurate knowledge of key status information when making allocation
decisions about serially reusable resources, a shared high speed
storage will be used as a repository to maintain the status data that
is needed.  When this status information changes on any of the
systems sharing the serially reusable resource the common repository
will be updated so that the other systems have the latest knowledge
concerning the resource.

      This common repository will be implemented through the coupling
facility technology.  The coupling facility has architected
structures that can be used to maintain device status information.
Specifically, the serialized list structure can be used in
representing serially reusable resources.  Each element will
represent as discrete resource and the data portion of the element
will contain data used to make allocation decision concerning the
resource.

      When a system is determining which resource to use it can read
the list to find out the current information about these resources
and then make an informed decision about which resource is best to
allocat...
