Abstract

To improve the viewing angle of the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), both the two-domain twist nematic cell and homeotropic cell were proposed before. In this disclosure, a chiral homeotropic cell and chiral multi-domain homeotropic cell are disclosed. The chiral homeotropic is another way to improve the panel's viewing angle. The chiral multi-domain cell is to further improve the viewing angle behavior of the multi-domain homeotropic cell. 1. Chiral homeotropic: In the conventional homeotropic cell, the homeotropic alignment and a negative dielectic anisotropic Liquid Crystal (LC) are used. Adjacent to the substrate surface, LC molecules are aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface.

  1.  Chiral homeotropic:
      In the conventional homeotropic cell, the homeotropic
       alignment and a negative dielectic anisotropic Liquid
       Crystal (LC) are used.  Adjacent to the substrate surface,
       LC molecules are aligned perpendicular to the substrate
       surface.  In the field-off state, the LC molecules deep
       inside the cell are also aligned perpendicular to the
       substrate surface.  In the field-on state, the LC molecules
       deep inside the cell are tilted uniformly toward the
       horizontal direction.  In this disclosure, we propose that a
       chiral additive is added to the LC which is filled into the
       homeotropic LCD panel.  By doing that, in the field-off
       state, the LC molecules stay the same as those of the
