Multi-Modal Trackball for

Mobile

Devices

Disclosed is an input device for small mobile computers, such
as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).  The key idea is to use a
"HEAD-ROTATABLE" trackball for supporting multiple input modes of a
PDA.

Fig. 1 shows various considerable input modes of a PDA:
  1.  Portrait Mode  -- for controlling the PDA in portrait
                         position.
  2.  Landscape Mode -- for controlling the PDA in landscape
                         position.
  3.  Mouse Mode     -- for using the PDA like a mouse.
  4.  Ruler Mode     -- for using the PDA like a ruler.

By making the head of the trackball rotatable, these multiple
input modes can be supported with a single device.

Fig. 2 shows two typical implementations of the head-rotatable
trackball.  Implementation example (a) can support input modes 1, 2
and 3.  Implementation example (b) can support input modes 1, 2 and
4.
