Abstract

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) readers consist of a magnetic read head, a magnet, check with MICR printed characters, a means to move the check, and a means to ensure that the MICR characters are held tightly against the read head as the check is driven across the read head. Dual-Force Pressure Pad for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition Reader

      Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) readers consist of a
magnetic read head, a magnet, check with MICR printed characters, a
means to move the check, and a means to ensure that the MICR
characters are held tightly against the read head as the check is
driven across the  read head.  This disclosure addresses the means of
holding the check tightly against the read head, known as the
pressure pad.

      Most pressure pads apply the same pressure regardless of the
direction the check is moving.  Since the check is usually read when
it is moving in only one direction, there is unnecessary wear on the
pressure pad and drag on the check.  This disclosure solves this
problem by decreasing the pressure when the check is moving in the
non-reading direction and using a cylindrical roller to hold the
check against the read head.

      Fig. 1 shows a MICR reader in a Point-of-Sale printer.  The
magnet magnetizes the MICR characters, the feed rollers move the
check in two directions, a read head reads the MICR characters, and a
pressure roller holds the check tightly against the read head.  Figs.
1 and 2 show the check moving into the printer and past the read head
and pressure roller.  The pressure roller has a metal core surrounded
by soft rubber.  The core has pivots that rotate within slots (shown
