Method of Selecting Node Elements

Disclosed is a method that allows a control unit in the
Input/Output (I/O) configuration of a central processing complex to
dynamically control the scope of reconfiguration actions by the
program that is executing on that central processing complex.

In previous control-unit-initiated reconfiguration, such as
is described in (*), there is the ability to limit the scope of the
program's search of configuration-data records to prevent the
inadvertent selection of configuration-data records that are not
intended to be used for the reconfiguration action.  A token
Node-Element Descriptor (NED) in each configuration-data record is
defined for this  purpose.  A set of configuration-data records that
can potentially be used for the same reconfiguration action contains
the same token NED which is unique with respect to the token NEDs
contained in other sets  of configuration-data records.  The scope is
static and cannot be changed  while the I/O subsystem is in use.

It is desirable to dynamically alter the scope of the search of
configuration-data records while the I/O subsystem is in use to
accommodate a variety of reconfiguration actions.  A means is needed
for a control unit to convey different scopes for different
reconfiguration requests.

Using the method introduced here, the control unit calls out
any NED within the configuration-data record associated with the
reconfiguration request.  The sc...
