      Disclosed is a method for distributing flow in a card on-board
package whereby the channel with the highest temperature will receive
the greatest flow rate.

      When designing a card cage (with varying flow distributions
through the cards), there is a need to control the flow-rate per
channel.  From a fluid mechanics point of view, the air chooses the
path of least resistance and, accordingly, air flow is distributed
accordingly.  It is conceivable that the card with the most power
could have inadequate flow.  Typically, sliding gates are implemented
at the top of the card cage to bias the flow to the card with the
least flow rate.  It is preferred that the flow distribution through
each channel be controlled based on the temperature distribution and
not be set a priori as the power to the various components may vary
as a result of power management.

      The Figure depicts a card cage (1) with several heated
electronic components (2) mounted on each card (3).  At the top of
the cage is an adjustable louver opening (4).  The louver is
connected to and controlled by a bi-metallic thermostat (5).  The set
point of the thermostat is adjusted to control the cooling air
temperature after it leaves the module heat sink or an average air
temperature over the card.  If the module is not powered, i.e., power
management, then the air temperature will be low, and the thermostat
will close the louvers.  This will allow ad...
