Mechanism for Assembling Predefined Images on the Internet

      Disclosed is a mechanism for assembling predefined images and
transfer via the internet.  This mechanism will reduce the load of
World Wide Web (WWW) servers.

      For example, an access counter shows the number of accesses
of Home Page.  In this case, WWW browser invokes the Common Gateway
Interface (CGI) program, and then the CGI program on WWW server
calculates the number, and finally transfers the data to the WWW
browser.  The access number is usually provided with an image.
Because the images on the internet are usually used in compressed
format, the server system, where the CGI program runs, needs to
decompress the predefined individual digits data, and then assembles
the digits to an  image of the access number, and finally compresses
the image.

      A GIF* image format, commonly used on the internet, permits
multiple images in a file, which is originally used to represent a
simple animation.  The GIF file consists of a header, a trailer, and
several compressed images.  Using this format, the server only holds
already-compressed individual digits data and just transfers them in
the sequence of the access number.  In this case, the server does not
require decompression and compression of the image, so the server's
load will be reduced.

      A mechanism is not limited to those described above, depending
on the characteristics of a program on the internet or intranet.
