Abstract

Disclosed is a new algorithm for a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to realize immediate transfers of requested data to a host system on resuming from the power save mode on a typical Operating System (OS). Assuming typical behavior of an OS, the new algorithm is as follows: before the HDD enters a power save mode, stopping spindle motor, by a power save command issued from a host, the HDD reads and caches the data expected to be accessed first by the host on resuming. When the data is accessed on resuming from the power save mode, the HDD immediately starts transfer of the data first, then spins up the spindle motor.

      Typical OSs normally issue read access to a specific address on
resuming from the power save mode.  The Figure shows a flow chart of
this algorithm as an example of its implementation.  If the first
command on resuming from power save mode is not read access, normal
process will  proceed.  If the address which is accessed on resuming
from the power save mode is different from the one which HDD has
memorized, it will be  memorized over as the expected address for
further access.
