Abstract

Currently, Systems Network Architecture (SNA) Gateways do not support encryption and compression. They rely on downstream workstations to provide the functionality. Most of the emulator products and older devices do not support this function. For some products that support this function, it requires an encryption engine and potentially an encryption adapter on each workstation. It also adds complexity to the workstation and mainframe configurations. Also, doing encryption and compression at the workstation eliminates the use of pooled Logical Units (LUs) at the SNA Gateway and adds to the complexity of managing the SNA gateway and network definitions.

Functional Additions to Gateway

      Currently, Systems Network Architecture (SNA) Gateways do not
support encryption and compression.  They rely on downstream
workstations to provide the functionality.  Most of the emulator

and potentially an encryption adapter on each workstation.  It also
adds complexity to the  workstation and mainframe configurations.
Also, doing encryption and compression at the workstation eliminates
the use of pooled Logical Units  (LUs) at the SNA Gateway and adds to
the complexity of managing the SNA  gateway and network definitions.

      Add data compression and encryption functionality in SNA
gateway, transparent to the downstream devices.  This allows old
devices and limited function downstream devices to participate
transparently and exploit the new functionality.  Data compression
also improves the performance of the network and reduces the network
cost drastically.  Encryption support at the gateway also reduces the
cost and managing of the network.
